Jeep continues its trend of producing special editions of the rugged SUVs in its lineup, with the latest addition being its most off-road ready vehicle ever, the 2017 Jeep Wrangler Rubicon Recon. This new model climbs atop the Rubicon Hard Rock as the new top dog in the Wrangler lineup.
Jeep has been making true sport utility vehicles since long before it became a "thing" for city dwellers unlikely ever to stray from the asphalt. Cute, so apt a description of so many of the not-really-utility vehicles nearly ubiquitous in our cities, is not really a word in the Jeep vocabulary.
Now, just to make sure you can bounce and trounce the rockiest, hilliest, most accidented terrain without worrying about damaging your vehicle, the new Rubicon Recon edition of the Wrangler features a tougher housing for the front axle and cast covers for the front rear differentials. It helps that they look pretty good, but of course that's just a bonus.
The rock rails that run between the wheel wells have been shortened in the Rubicon Recon to allow for available larger 35-inch tires, in case the standard 32-inch off-road BF Goodrich tires are not sufficient for you.
Those tires benefit from pretty awesome power provided by the 3.6L, 285-hp V6 engine; this is the same one fitted in all the current Wrangler models. It runs through a part-time 4WD system weighted to the rear axle for maximum grip on any terrain. You'll really love the crawl ratio of 73.1:1 provided by the 6-speed manual transmission, which makes climbing obstacles not just a breeze but a whole lot of fun.
Great looks, because why not?
While utility and off-road chops remain the top focus of this Wrangler, Jeep did what is called for when producing a special edition: make it special, and make it beautiful. Gorgeous red accents dot the inside of the Rubicon Recon Edition of the 2017 Jeep Wrangler, and perfectly contrast with the black leather (heated) seats and leather-wrapped steering wheel to create an eye-popping head-turning cockpit sure to knock the complacency out of the most jaded SUV enthusiast.
Buyers have the option of choosing the standard Premium Sunrider soft top or the available body-coloured hard top.
